LOTM- Survival in the Wild

Have you ever wandered into the wild and thought "what would I do if I met a bear"? Well, today I have some tips for just that...

Black Bear:
If you come across a black bear in the wild, thank your lucky stars. At least the black bear is the least threatening. But to keep yourself safe and avoid any chance of the bear wanting to bother you, here's what you do-
Get as big as you can (if you're in a group huddle together) stand on your toes and reach your arms up. Talk to the bear in a low assertive- yet calm voice. Fight back if it attacks.

Grizzly Bear:
If you come across a grizzly bear, be very cautious, they can be very aggressive. Here's what you do if you meet a grizzly-
If the bear plans on attacking, play dead. Lay on your belly with your hands on the back of your neck. You will at least discourage the bear from hurting you very badly... eh, fun right?

Polar Bear:
If you come across a polar bear, well, I don't know why you would come across a polar bear, but if you do-
Pray. haha! Back away slowly and avoid eye contact. Use deterrents but don't run.

Any bear can outrun any human- so DON'T run. Keep some bear spray with you, although it's been found to just agitate the bear rather than deter it... Better to be safe than sorry, yes?

Be sure to check out the other LOTM for their survival in the wild tips!

I'm on vacation in Tennessee right now, and this post cracked me up. If you come across a polar bear... pray. Lol that just killed me. My mister and I are big wimps and keep freaking out about meeting bears up here. Heres to hoping we don't meet any! Thanks for the tips, lady!

Very interesting to know. I always think about the movie "Without A Paddle" where I learned the fetal position isn't very effective.

I am so glad that someone is finally addressing the serious danger of bears. (I'm only half-joking) When I was in Montana, my little 'comes-from-Australia-wrestles-crocodiles-and-deadly-snakes' butt was petrified of running into a bear. I discovered bear mace, that made me more scared... Bear MACE?! WHAT! OK. I'm calm. I'm glad you elaborated with 'play dead'. I'm sure I'll be able to lie perfectly still and calm while a grizzly plays around with my kidneys... Might just stay inside...

Thanks for the tips lady! I live in the northwoods & there's a spot in the middle of nowhere that a big group of our friends likes to go camping every year. We've seen black bear on the drive to the site, but never in close vicinity to the site, but I feel like we've been lucky and one of these years - we are going to run into one! It sounds like black bears are easily spooked by noise.
