Blogging 101

Good Morning Class.
*good morning miss Gentri*
haha! Juuuuuuuuust kiiiidiiiiiiing.

Today I wanted to share some tips that I've picked up along my blogging journey. I'm sure you've heard most of them before, but that should just make you realize the importance (or annoyance) of it. Haha!

Tip #5: Word Verification
It. Is. Driving. Us. All. Crazy!
haha! Seriously though, you're going to get spammy comments with or without it. If you feel the need to moderate your comments, PLEASE just change them to "Approval Only". I have had mine set that way for probably 9 months now, it is great! PLUS Blogger recently changed Word Verifications, now they're so incredibly hard to decipher. I beg you! Please change it!
It's a simple process:
Step 1: Log into Blogger
Step 2: Click on "Settings"
Step 3: Click on "Comments"
Step 4: Scroll down to "Show Word Verification"
Step 5: Change "Yes" to "No"
Step 6 *optional*: Right above that section is a section called "Comment Moderation". If you wish to approve your comments before they are published, select "Always".
*NOTE* I guess you can only change this in the old blogger interface. You can easily switch back and forth between the new and old interface if you just want to quickly change this.

The blogging world will love you.

Tip #4: Sponsor Rotation
If you have sponsors you probably have some kind of rotation routine so everyone gets a chance near the top, right? Well, I'm here to make this REEEEEAAAL easy for you! What if- You didn't have to worry about that, the ads rotated themselves EVERY time the page was refreshed, not only that- but they rotated according to their Ad SIZE, and your sponsors were all happyhappyhappy?? That sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it's not! :D Here's how you can do this:
*I learned this from THIS tutorial. It's amazing and I've never looked back*
Step 1: Log into blogger and go to "Design"
Step 2: Click "Add a Gadget" and select "HTML/Java Script" (move it to the side while you get the code you're going to use)
Step 3: Go to THIS site and scroll down to where it says "Directions" then select and copy ALL of the code that is in the "Step 1" box
Step 4: Paste that code you just copied into your new "HTML/Java Script" gadget
Step 5: Go back to THIS site, scroll down (below the step 1 and 2 boxes) until you see 3 grey boxes. Select and copy ALL of the code in the 1st grey box
Step 6: Paste the code you just copied AT the BOTTOM of your other code
Step 7: Make sure all of your sponsor buttons are coded
*I think this is where people get lost, so pay attention. I'll keep it as simple and clear as possible*
Step 8: Look at the code you just pasted in your "HTML/ Java Script". The part that says "randomordercontent group1" tells the code which Ad Size the ad is in. So if you have 3 sizes (say small, medium, and large) your "group 1" would be Large, "group 2" would be Medium, and "group 3" would be Small. To make a new group just change the "1" to a "2" or "3" or whatever it is!
Where the code says "//Some content here" you actually delete this and paste in the code of your sponsor. So if I was one of your Large sponsors, it would look like this:
ALL I did there was paste my button's code where it said "//Some content here". That's it!
Step 9: Just paste the code from the first grey box, for as many sponsors as you have. If you have 5 Large Sponsors you'll want 5 "group 1"'s, if you have 6 Medium Sponsors you'll want 6 "group 2"'s, if you have 4 Small Sponsors you'll want 4 "group 3"'s. Make sense?? Remember, you make a new group just by changing that number.
Step 10: Once all of the code is added go back to THIS site and grab ALL of the code from the LAST grey box.
Step 11: Paste that code BELOW ALL of the other code in your "HTML/Java Script" gadget.
Step 12: Click "Save" then view your blog. If everything was done correctly, then it should look perfect (like my sponsors do on the right. haha!) and if you refresh the page, they should all trade places according to their ad size.
*NOTE* when a new month comes and it's time to change sponsors, I don't start completely over. I just replace the old sponsor ad code with the new one.

Well, I'm falling asleep here (since I'm writing this Saturday night), so I'm going to share the rest of my blogging tips later today. :) happy Sunday!

P.S. If you have any questions- please just ask!

Yes, I hate word verification! I usually won't even comment now if it's there.

I love this post! My buttons rotate using that tutorial, but I've never tried with more than one size... maybe I'll try it today! Thanks Gentri!

I am SO with you on word verification! I hate it. Problem is that you can only turn it off if you are still using the old blogger version (at least it was that way 2 months ago)...and I don't think most bloggers know that? I use the new version and I was looking *everywhere* to turn off the word verification, but couldn't find it. So I thought that is was turned off. But then I got the tip to switch to the old blogger to check and turn it off...
Maybe add that to your post?

I really hate word verification--and if I am feeling really lazy and tired it puts me off commenting, which is such a shame--but I am not a robot and really bad at reading those words.

And I really need to create my own button for my blog--should really learn how to do that.

My post for tomorrow was complaining about word verification - good thing I was notified just before posting it that MY wv was on! I think maybe when the new interface changed it put everyone back on that? I know for SURE I had it off when I first started!

Thanks for the sponsor-roll tip! I had no idea you could do that.

I go back and forth about the word verification thing. I think I'm going to take your advice and go awhile without it. The amount of spam was driving me crazy but it really doesn't matter so much. Thanks for this.

Oh my gosh, I cannot even begin to lash out on how lame word verification is. It makes me want to scream every time it pops up and it won't take my entry! The worst is when you do audio captcha and it slurs all the words together like a drunk lady. No, I am not a robot, you jerk.

And what the crap kind of word is captcha? Blahhhh!

It makes me feel better that I'm not the only one that's irked by word verification! I honestly thought I was alone in that thought since EVERYONE has it. I mean...almost everyone. Thanks for the instructions for the sponsor rotation. I applied it to my blog : ) You're so awesome.

LOVE these tips Gentri! THANKS! Yes, everyone should get rid of the word verification ASAP! Ha ha!

I did try this tutorial for the rotating sponsor/buttons but I found that every rotation one of the sponsor ads would disappear. I am not sure what that was all about so I removed it. I might give it another try as the way you explained seems a lot clearer.

These are all great blogging tips.

Thank you so much for these tips! Especially that you have to go back to the old interface to change the word verification. I hadn't even noticed you could switch back to the old one. Thanks so much Gentri!
