Blogging 101 (102?)

Tip #3: No-Reply Commenters
Don't know what this is? Then you are the one that should be reading this. haha! You see, myself, and all of the other blogs you comment on would LOVE to reply to your comments. But we can't. Because you are a "noreply comment" blogger. It's easy to change, and you will be making blog friends left and right after doing this!

Step 1: Log into blogger and go to "Edit Profile"
Step 2: Check the box that says "Show my email address"
Your email is now public- MEANING- that when you leave a comment on a blog they can easily reply to your comment via email!
Step 3: Don't want your blog emails going to the same email address you use to blog? Then scroll down to "Identity". Your username should be your blogging email. Then where it says "email address" should be the one you want your comments going to.
Step 4: Save and DONE!

Tip #2: Replying to Comments:
Now that you are all set up to receive replies from comments left on other blogs, here's how YOU can reply to comments left on your blog!
Step 1: Blogger automatically sends you an email with the comments left on your blog, correct?? (if you have your comment moderation set to "approval only" you'll receive the emails AFTER you approve them.)
Step 2: Open one of those comment emails.
Step 3: Click "Reply"
and you thought it was going to be hard! haha!
Step 4: If instead of seeing the commenters email address in the address box you see this: noreply-comment@blogger.com kindly refer that blogger to this tutorial so they can learn too.

Tip #1: Please the Eye
You could have a blog filled with the most inspiring words, the prettiest pictures, wonderful tutorials, etc. But unless your blog is pleasing to the eye, easy to navigate through, and everything fits harmoniously, people will not stick around (I know mine is getting a bit crazy. I'm trying to get a new design, but it might take a while).
First- do not over clutter your blog. Keep it simple. Here are some things that turn me off to reading a blog:
- Crazy backgrounds
- A million different fonts
- Colored fonts (please, I WILL NOT squint to read what you wrote in that baby shade of pink)
- Pictures that are too big for the body of your blog and reach into the sidebars, etc.
- Every picture is tiny and fuzzy
- No pictures
- Your posts are longer than the day
I could go on...

But I won't.

I know that I am not perfect and probably commit some blogging sins myself. But I hope you learned something from my blogging tips posts! In a few days I'll be posting my "Blogging Etiquette" tips. Goodness knows that's even more important.

Great tips!! I always get bummed out when I'm about to reply a comment and they have no reply. Design of a blog is crucial - that's something I'm constantly working on..

OMG, I hope that's not a legitimate picture of someone's CHILD. That is...frightening. Lol.

I agree with all of this. There are SO many times I start to reply to a comment only to realize I am writing my BFF, noreply-comment@blogger.com. I usually don't realize this until I've written about half a paragraph responding to their sweet, thoughtful comment and then I'm just too annoyed to bother with replying to anyone. UGH.

I really want to get better about replying to comments, in general. This post is a great challenge!

Amazing! I agree with all of these, especially word verification and ugly blogs! I hate fuzzy cell phone pics! The best investment I made ion my blog/shop (and life!) was getting a professional camera. Even a blog with no words would be followed with beautiful pictures!

Great job Gentri! And I love your name too!

You know, no matter how often people mention the no-reply blogger thing, I feel like there are some people who still don't get the memo.

Such a good post.
I hate colored fonts! They drive me nuts.

And music that auto-plays. I'm not a fan.

These are awesome tips and VERY true. I can't tell you how many times I have replied to a comment just to find their email address noreply... grrrrr!

Good lord that picture is horrible. I thought your one of the toenail was bad, but seriously! Also, definitely didn't know about the reply to email thing until I kept getting emails back from people. Then I was like OH. Lightbulb moment for me. I'm sure others had the same when reading this. Good tips! (Sorry for the novel of a comment.)

Haha I guess there are several reasons why my blog would not please your eyes ; ] It's all good though because I like my blog the way it is--though I definitely agree with you that the "clean" blogs are more popular : ]

And you are right about the "noreply" thing but I actually just turned on the option to reply to comments so they show up on the blog itself--so everyone can see answers. But I guess not too many people go back and read the responses haha : ]

I like your tips though! I'll look forward to more in the future if you post more!

Pleasing the eye is so important. There are some blogs I come across that are just so difficult to look at & navigate I never go back!

I am absolutely with you in tip #1 - a clean simple blog is most enjoyable to read. Sometimes if it's too crazy I can't even stick around. It's too bad because there are probably a lot of good posts I am missing out on.

Once again - these are all great tips. I am interested to see what you have to say about etiquette.

Thanks again for more tips Gentri! It's always appreciated!

p.s. I think your signature isn't working anymore. Just an FYI :)

Excellent tips! I actually have my comments set to moderate, and I get the email as soon as the comment is made. I can even "moderate/approve" the comment from the email that is sent...? Maybe mine is set differently?
