The Oak Tree
by Johnny Ray Ryder Jr.

A mighty wind blew night and day.
It stole the Oak Tree's leaves away.
Then snapped its boughs
and pulled its bark
until the Oak was tired and stark.

But still the Oak Tree held its ground
while other trees fell all around.
The weary wind gave up and spoke,
"How can you still be standing Oak?"

The Oak Tree said, I know that you
can break each branch of mine in two,
carry every leaf away,
shake my limbs and make me sway.

But I have roots stretched in the earth,
growing stronger since my birth.
You'll never touch them, for you see
they are the deepest part of me.

Until today, I wasn't sure
of just how much I could endure.
But now I've found with thanks to you,
I'm stronger than I ever knew.

Ah, I LOVE that tree picture. There's something so cathartic for me looking at and spending time near old trees. It's like they have wisdom to share or something. I can't really explain it.

Great post, Gentri! I love that inspirational poem! That really means a lot :)

And no joke- I came across those Cookie Monster cupcakes just last week and am now so inspired to make them! Although I have a feeling they'd probably look a lot more like the second photo. But they'd still probably taste great!

oh my.. the giraffe photo.. sooo cute and amazing!

i should write a little blurb about how i did the summer2011 painting with light photo! i actually have a tutorial about painting with light here.. but it's actually a lot easier to do the summer2011 one! http://www.blogger.com/comment-published.g?blogID=1944395092243007785

i'll go over it real quick: i used my point and shoot.. set it to a long exposure (always takes me a bit to find that setting!) and set it to 5 seconds (5") then just put the camera on a timer so you have a few seconds to set up.. make sure it's dark.. and paint with light! we used our cellphones :) if you're writing words make each letter backwards.. otherwise they'll be backwards in the photo!
